Rear Brake Pads

Rear Brake Pad Replacement with Harris Oceanside Chevrolet Buick GMC

Most drivers already know that their vehicle’s brake pads will wear down eventually and need to be replaced at some point. But what many do not realize is that all four brake pads don’t need to be replaced at the same time. In fact, the rear brakes only handle about 25 to 30 percent of the braking power on most vehicles, and so their brake pads can go for longer periods of time in between replacements. It can still be challenging to know exactly when you need a rear brake pad replacement on your GM vehicle (Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, etc.), so here are some useful guidelines.

Check GM Brake Pads Every Year

Brake pads are typically designed to last between 40,000 and 80,000 km depending on your driving habits – higher-traffic city driving with frequent stops and goes will result in more wear and tear, for example. Even so, it’s a good idea to check your GM brake pads regularly to prevent unwelcome surprises. This should be done at a minimum once a year, although many drivers choose to have their brake pads inspected every time they get a tire rotation. Signs you’re due for a rear brake pad replacement include:

  • Weak / less responsive brakes
  • Clicking or screeching sounds, especially from the rear
  • The back part of your car feels like it’s in less control while braking
  • The car seems to pull to the side while braking

Don’t Wait Too Long to Replace Worn Down Rear Brake Pads

Even though the rear brake pads carry considerably less responsibility than your front brake pads, not replacing them as needed can carry dire consequences. The rear wheels will have a more difficult time stopping, leading to braking instability and tires wearing down faster. In extreme cases, the rear brake pads can wear down to their metal backings, causing significant damage to the rotors and calipers. Sure, your GM rear brake pads may be easy to forget about if you’re not replacing them as often as the front ones, so it’s a good idea to keep a schedule of your vehicle’s maintenance and/or ask your mechanic about them when you go in for other basic maintenance needs.

Only Use OEM Parts During Any Brake Service

Brake pads, just like other replacement parts, should be specifically designed for your make and model. Make sure you’re getting GM brake pads for your rear brake pad replacement to ensure you will get the most life out of them. The right fit will also ensure safety and a better brake response.
